The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), was established as an autonomous organisation in 1969, by the Ministry of Education (now known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development), Government of India. The primary objective of the ICSSR is to promote and fund research in the social sciences. To assist the ICSSR, Regional Centres were set up in the early days for the promotion of its objectives and activities in the regions. The Eastern Regional Centre (ERC), started functioning from 1974 in collaboration with the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC). Currently, the ERC covers the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The objectives of the Regional Centres are inter- alia:
Ø to provide a platform for the social scientists of the region to come together for promotion of social science research, especially in terms of regional perspectives.
Ø to serve as nodal points for promoting interaction between social scientists of the region with national and international communities of social scientists.
Ø to provide financial support for organising workshops/ conferences/ seminars and lectures by distinguished scholars.
Ø to assist regional professional organisations of social scientists.
Ø to provide low cost accommodation to scholars and students in the Centre’s guest house for library or fieldwork.
Ø to organise research methodology course and workshops in the region on appropriate themes.
From 2004, the Regional Centres were separated from the collaborating host institutions and began to function separately as ICSSR Administrative Regional Offices. This has provided the opportunity to make a new beginning in expanding and revitalizing the existing activities as well as in launching new programmes for social scientists and research scholars in the Eastern Region. From November 2004, the office of the ERC has shifted to 10, Jadunath Sarkar Road (Lake Terrace), Calcutta-700 029.
The ERC-ICSSR has an Advisory Committee which directs its activities based on the objectives and availability of funds from time to time. The Advisory Committee meets at least twice a year or more, when required. The present Advisory Committee consists of the following :
